The premise of This Bridge Theatre’s “AMIOS’ SHOTZ!” is to give theatre-makers an opportunity to create, regardless of their level of experience. Participants are assigned to groups as writers, directors and actors and are given three conditions that must be met in their 10(ish)-minute work. The most recent iteration of “SHOTZ!” was presented by Louisville Fringe Fest in partnership with Actors Theatre’s Storytelling Revolution Festival and included the prompts 1) a revolution 2) the line “I have not yet begun to fight” and 3) someone singing.

This evening of short plays provided a smorgasbord of themes such as the animal world, dystopian conditions and family dynamics. In Rogue Drone by Tony Lewis and directed by Martin French, a timely fable of an arrogant ruler refusing to listen to her advisors takes place in a bee colony. Sara Sandfort’s A Doe, directed by Shannon Wooley Allison, begins with friends accusing each other of irresponsibility and ends with an eloquent commentary on life by the deer they hit with their car. For the Kids! by Tony Smith and directed by Allison Sims is an oddly twisted tale of children’s entertainers navigating their relationship as uncle and nephew while a parent threatens them for injuring her child. Marianne Zickuhr directs I Don’t Speak Lunar by Allie Fireel, where two moms, their headstrong daughter and a

waiter, who is possibly an alien and definitely the daughter’s boyfriend, contemplate moving to the moon to escape the insanity of Earth.

For this reviewer, the standout of the evening was Ren Faire Folk by Rachel Meadors and

directed by Stephanie Michelle Collins. The acting of Annie Mayer, Alex Slade, Sophie Hill and Zye Reid was consistently robust and committed as the story veered between online lovers planning to meet in real life, and Oberon and Titania’s eternal feuding. The costuming provided the final elevated touch. Another strong ensemble performed Brad White’s Riot Act, directed by Hyde Eisenberg. Regina Frost’s drag queen character, aided by sidekicks Rayan Houghlin Walker and Allie Jo Hail, takes a valiant stand for good against those who wish them the worst.

The creativity and energy channeled by the artists involved in “SHOTZ” strikes a vital spark in our local theatre community. Be on the lookout for the next round of “SHOTZ!” and consider joining the performing or producing team, or at the very least the audience, and support this truly original work.
