Screamgirls By Tony Lewis & Yehudah Husband Directed by Yehudah Husband

Drag Daddy Productions brings the chills and thrills this spooky season with their world-

premiere show Screamgirls directed by Yehudah Husband. This mashup of Dreamgirls and Mean Girls is a playful whodunnit –asking the all important question: “Who murdered Kaddy Morris?”

Staging is very minimal for this cabaret style show. Set design is limited to a digital dressing room backdrop and portable clothing rack, featuring a rainbow of outfits. The filming of the movie Screamgirls is underway. Stars Regina Jones (Leah Halston), Effie Weiners (Uhstel Valentine), and Karen Robinson (Diane Rae) take to the stage to perform a delightful parody of the title track “Screamgirls.” Glamour abounds with big wigs and sparkling red dresses. Harmonies were a little off in the opening number and the backing track overwhelmed the voices of the performers at times. However, each girl shines in their solo parts of the song.

Film director, Curtis Duvall (Robbie Smith), cuts the scene after the musical number. Shortly after, makeup artist Unicorn Sparkles or Damien Sparkles (Regina Frost) runs in screaming and announces that rising rival star, Kaddy Morris is dead. Enter Detective Norberry Gumshoe (Stephanie Michelle Collins) who is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery and delivers a stellar rendition of “Somebody’s Eyes.” Gumshoe interviews each of the suspects who all claim their innocence yet reveal motivations through subsequent musical numbers. Notable vocal performances include “Bang Bang” brilliantly sung by Mr. Duvall and Karen’s intentional and hilarious off-key “I Will Survive/Survivor” mashup. Assistant Jenn Coco and Stylist Sparkles dance skills prove stronger than vocal.

Screamgirls wraps up with a reveal of the criminal, a big musical number, and a company dance finale. The show, like the hair, is big and full of secrets. With bewitching Queens, campy musical numbers, and zesty puns, you’ll find yourself spellbound.
