Pericles, The Prince of Tyre Written by William Shakespeare Directed by Martin French Review by Brian Kennedy

No matter where in Southern Indiana this show is happening, SoIn to Shakespeare presents a casual, entertaining, locally-flavored Pericles.

Pericles, the Prince of Tyre, a relatively lesser known Shakespeare work that Martin French directed for SoIn to Shakespeare, follows the prince (Joe Monroe), his love Thaisa (Anna Meade) and their daughter Marina (Ashley Wingo) as they try to find their ways in life after being separated. Along each journey, themes of loss and rebirth as well as maintaining virtue in the face of adversaries are explored.

Being this show will be in multiple locations in Southern Indiana, Pericles takes on a casual, traveling actor vibe. For the Friday night performance in Corydon, it’s performed at the gazebo on the First State Capitol grounds in the middle of the town square. There’s no stage setup, only props and costumes the actors bring onto stage. The actors have body mics, though these cut out multiple times during the show. Actors also play multiple characters, sometimes within the same scene.

Audience members, sitting on lawn chairs, blankets or benches for the free show, were very appreciative of the local touches to the show. The “lands” where each scene took place were local cities (Corydon, Georgetown, New Albany, etc.). Also very admirable was the inclusion of audience members in the show. The kids became knights and pirates. Random audience member Charlie, meanwhile, was shown how to use a broom to sweep. A balloon artist was to the right of the gazebo making swords, hats or whatever else the kids wanted. Some of those swords and hats ended up becoming props in the show.

The cast, regardless of the role, did a great job at keeping the casual vibe going, even while using Shakespearean Old English. Fløren K was wonderful while taking on the narrator role and leading audiences, binder in hand, through each scene. Monroe and Meade had very believable chemistry as they met and fell in love. Wingo, meanwhile, was the overall best performer as Marina, showcasing a caring, virtuous demeanor while also possessing a beautiful singing voice.

SoIn to Shakespeare’s Pericles was a fun night out for a free, entertaining show. Bring a lawn chair and bug spray for the group’s next performance.
