Presented in two acts, The Gospel According to Mark offers an engaging evening of humor, storytelling, and thoughtful reflection. Written and performed by J.R. Stuart, this one-man show brings the legendary author to life through his own words, blending sharp wit with timeless observations about society, faith, and human nature.

Act One introduces audiences to Twain's 1895 "Debt Tour," the worldwide lecture journey he undertook after falling deeply into debt. Traveling as far as India and Australia, Twain relied on his storytelling and humor to entertain audiences while earning enough to repay his creditors. Throughout the act, Stuart highlights the qualities that made Twain one of America's most beloved writers—his quick wit, sense of humor, and keen observations of human nature. Audiences are treated to stories from Twain's years as a Mississippi River pilot, filled with humorous anecdotes and nostalgic reflections on life along the river. The act concludes with a dramatic reading from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as Stuart vividly brings the novel's characters and spirit to life, creating one of the evening's most memorable moments.

Act Two shifts to 1905, where the audience sees the public persona of Mark Twain give way to the private life of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain was a pseudonym). The stage transforms into Clemens’ study where he is forming his autobiography. In this act Stuart presents the vulnerability of an old man dealing with the grief of losing his wife and daughter. The further highlight of this act is when Stuart delivers Clemons’ powerful anti-racism speech The United States of Lyncherdom. Stuart delivers these lines with such intensity and emotion that audience members could easily believe Twain was speaking about the present day.

More than a history lesson or literary tribute, The Gospel According to Mark reminds audiences why Twain's words continue to resonate more than a century later. Through humor, heart, and an engaging performance, J.R. Stuart brings one of America's greatest storytellers to life in a production that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Go for the laughs, but stay for the heart.
